Did you know?

There is $3.6 billion in unclaimed property, held by Treasury and owned by Virginia residents, as of September 2024.

It’s estimated that.

It is estimated that one in four Virginians have unclaimed property held by the Treasury.waiting to be claimed at no cost.

What does that mean?

That’s around 2.15 million residents who may have assets waiting to be claimed!

WHAT are “Unclaimed Assets” anyway?

As of September 2024, the Virginia Treasury held $3.6 billion in unclaimed property owned by Virginia residents. Unclaimed assets are financial accounts or properties that could not be returned to their rightful owners such as:

• Uncashed checks (like payroll or refund checks)
• Bank accounts or investment accounts (savings, checking, stocks)
• Insurance payouts or refunds
• Utility deposits or refunds
• Safe deposit box contents
• Even the balance remaining on expired gift cards!

WHY does the Virginia Treasury have these assets?

The Treasury holds unclaimed assets as a custodian for the rightful owners. The government does this to protect these funds from being lost permanently and to ensure they remain accessible for owners or their heirs to claim at any time.

The corporation or institution that had the property is legally required to try and contact the rightful owner at least once, and after a specified period of time turn it over to the Treasury.

WHO has unclaimed assets?

Odds are good that someone in your family has unclaimed property…

It’s estimated that one in four Virginians have unclaimed property held by the Treasury.

That’s around 2.15 million residents who may have assets waiting to be claimed!

HOW does the Treasury Let People Know About Unclaimed Funds?

Some organizations will share information about the database, and often localities will include a brochure with property tax bills. Despite those efforts, few residents are informed of the database or the odds that their family may be included!

HOW does Civic Innovations help reunite Virginians with their unclaimed property?

Civic Innovations is teaming up with the Virginia Treasury to help people find their unclaimed property. We look up names in the Treasury’s database using public information. If we find a match, we send a letter with details on how to claim the property. We make it clear that this service is free, and we don’t ask for or accept any payment.

WHEN and WHERE is CI² performing their research?

We’re focusing on neighborhoods in Hampton Roads where people could really use some extra money. We’ll visit local groups to explain our program and show them our special letter and envelope. We hope they’ll tell their neighbors, so when they see our envelope, they’ll know it’s good news and not junk mail!
